Their Ancient Privilege

Their ancient privilege is a body of oil paintings featuring recognisable scenes from the Australian home. Hidden within the paintings is UV text copied from William Blackstone's The Commentaries on the Laws of England (1765-1769). The text relays confronting notions regarding a husband's power and control over his wife.

By juxtaposing nostalgic and comforting scenes from the home with Blackstone's text, my work asks the viewer to consider where the principles of the past lurk today, questioning the meaning of safety in our own homes.

I pay my respects to the traditional custodians of the land I live and work on, the Wurrundjeri people of the Kulin nation. Always was, always will be.
